Laptops to be distributed to the children of the world

2007-11-13

SAN FRANCISO, U.S.-  The campaign to start donating low- cost computers to needed children of the world started yesterday, while the machines are being assembled in large quantities in China to soon be delivered to Uruguay, Peru, and Mexico.

The non- profit organization One Laptop Per Child ( OLPC) looks like it is about to reach its promise: the first XO laptops that look to introduce those in need into the digital era are being made by Quanta Computers in the Chinese city of Changsha.

"Against all negative odds (...) we have developed and now built the most advanced and ecological laptop of the world and one that is specifically designed to teach children the passion to learn", said Nicholas Negroponte, founder of this charity.

The organization has had to face the fact that governments haven't kept their promise to economically support the cause to buy computers for their children.

Now, it is expected that the 15- day campaign that was started this Monday, "Give One Get One" (GIGI), will rush the orders motivating those in more prosperous countries.

For every computer that is donated to a child, the donor receives another one. The original price was going to be $100 dollars but, it was almost doubled due to the rise in costs after Negroponte launched the campaign in 2005.
